Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are thin metal filaments approximately the width of several hairs. The sensations patients experience during treatments range from nothing at all to a fleeting ache or pinch in the area being needles. During treatment, most people will experience a shift to a calmer, clearer, less troubled self. Many people are amazed by how relaxed they feel during and after treatment and consistently, people report a heightened sense of well-being.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes! As long as it is performed by a competent licensed practitioner, acupuncture is extremely safe. Here at Bronx Acupuncture, Chris C. Chen, L.Ac., MSTOM, Dipl. O.M. (NCCAOM), ADS, our Board Certified New York State Licensed Acupuncturist, only uses sterile individually wrapped disposable needles that are discarded after one use.

What are the benefits of acupuncture?

Acupuncture is helpful for many chronic illnesses and health concerns that have no clear origin or cause. Patients committed to a healthy lifestyle who receive ongoing acupuncture treatment for maintenance and health promotion often experience being sick less often and recover more quickly. They also find improvement of vitality and stamina, being able to take care of their own health, relationships with others becoming more harmonious and reductions in long term health care costs.

A recent survey of people who receive acupuncture, indicates that they see their physicians less frequently and use fewer medications. In addition, over two thirds of those surveyed reported having avoided recommended surgery.

Do I need to be sick or have a problem in order to benefit from acupuncture treatments?

Absolutely not! Many of our patients come for regularly scheduled treatments to prevent illness and to maintain a vital state of health throughout the year.

How many treatments will I need?

This is unique to each individual. Some patients may even notice an immediate improvement in their health, while for others acupuncture tends to have a cumulative effect over several visits. Our experience with chronic ailments is that they take time not just on the part of Chris, the Acupuncturist, but also on the part of the patient in order to achieve noticeable improvement in their conditions. For most chronic conditions usually at least 12 treatments on a once or twice weekly basis tends to offer the best outcome.

What should I wear for my acupuncture treatment?

Come dressed in loose comfortable clothes that can be rolled up to the knees or elbows. Depending on your condition and treatment requirement, if Chris needs to access additional areas of your body, he will provide you with a towel for cover. Also, after the acupuncture needles are inserted, you will be covered to keep you comfortable.

Does the clinic offer Chinese herbs? If so, what kind?

Yes, Chris, our Acupuncturist, may prescribe Chinese herbal remedies that consist primarily of patent herbal formulas, which come in pill form or as herbal granules which are made into teas. Our Chinese herbal patent formulas are from the largest Chinese Herbal Pharmacy on the East Coast. Established since 1973, and extensively tested for consistency and safety standards, these herbs can be taken with confidence and assurance in their quality. This Pharmacy is also the first FDA registered facility of vacuum packing herbs in New York City.
